A dog probably didn't die from vaccines, but we'll never really know

Complaint: Complaint 18-07
Respondent: Stephanie Schneider
Premises: Sunrise Pet Clinic

The complainant took her otherwise-healthy dog to Schneider for vaccinations and both the bordetella and rabies vaccines were administered at the same time. The dog got sick the same day with mouth, tooth, gum, and gastrointestinal problems initially attributed to an adverse vaccine reaction. The dog continued to struggle off and on with health problems that waxed and waned, and several months later, the dog became very sick and was diagnosed with immune-mediated thrombocytopenia. The dog was euthanized and the complainant felt that the combination of vaccines set everything in motion.

Both Schneider and the Investigative Committee said that the this probably wasn't a reaction to the vaccines and that they're given together all the time. They also conceded that you can't prove it wasn't a result of the vaccines, but there's no evidence to suggest such a thing would ever happen; someone else at Schneider's practice attempted to chalk much of it up to tummy issues the dog had when she was younger and suddenly made a comeback.

There are procedures for reporting adverse vaccine reactions, but one wonders how often they're used in delayed situations like this. If nobody reports it because they know it just doesn't happen, then there won't be any evidence that it could happen, so it won't get reported.
