A complainant is upset about the handling of a failed artificial insemination

Complaint: Complaint 18-120
Respondent: Larry Hudman
Premises: Kennel Care Veterinary Hospital

The complainant wants his dog bred and wanted it all to go smoothly. He'd even ordered top quality dog semen from California. He states that he had disputes with Hudman about when to test the dog for infections because he didn't want the dog on medications when she was in heat. He complains that Hudman was also very vague about when he wanted the semen, which was a problem because the breeder in California needed to know when to get the male "prepped." He also says the dog was to be given semen twice but only got it the once. He also says that the dog didn't get pregnant, and he feels that there were mistakes made by Hudman so he wants his money back. (It's difficult to follow because the complaint is in the form of an email thread with Nathan at Kennel Care.)

Hudman says that he had previously terminated the complainant as a client because of his behavior but that Nathan is a nice person who let the guy come back. Hudman details the procedures leading up to the insemination. There was "successful AI" that was "done with no backwash" and they "performed inverted feathering to help the semen through the cervix." He says that he recommended breeding the dog twice but the complainant declined, noting that the semen he received did not say it was for two breedings. He says that later the complainant also tried to breed the dog "naturally."

The Investigative Committee discussed that it's too bad they couldn't get the dog pregnant, and sometimes it's hard to find a balance between the owner's reproductive preferences and that of an experienced veterinarian.
