A complainant takes his dog elsewhere after a failed surgery at a specialty and referral center

Complaint: Complaint 18-121
Respondent: Brian Toncray
Premises: 1st Pet Veterinary Centers Phoenix

The complainant says that he brought his dog to 1st Pet for surgery and was picked up the next day. He references pictures that show his concerns for dead tissue, poor stitching, and a drain tube that wasn't working properly. The dog was taken back to 1st Pet for a follow-up and pointed out his concerns. He claims he was told that the dog would need more surgery and that if he wanted to have 1st Pet do it that they needed to call in a surgeon from a different facility. He says he was also told that the dog would need surgery for skin grafts. The complainant says he then took the dog to a different veterinarian who was able to do surgery, extract 90 milliliters of fluid, and do a very extensive wound repair.

Toncray states that the dog came in with an acute degloving injury (skin or other tissue had somehow separated from the underlying tissue or muscle). He says that he explained the entire procedure and that there was no way to know the outcome, warning them that problems could occur. He provides a summary of the surgery and notes that the complainants were sent home with post-operative paperwork warning them that further problems may occur.

The Investigative Committee said that just because the wound had further problems did not mean that anything was done incorrectly. They also state that it was "unfortunate" that the drain clogged but that also didn't mean that anything was done incorrectly. They said that at the time of the second surgery it would have been easier to determine what was actually dead. The complainant's concerns about poor follow-up care, implied upselling, or lack of availability of surgical staff are not mentioned.
