A dispute over the necessity of a horse's euthanasia leads to a complaint before the board

Complaint: Complaint 18-32
Respondent: Margaret Loomer
Premises: Durango Equine Veterinary Clinic

The complainant says her horse suffered from Cushing's Disease and laminitis but was being managed well. She says Loomer was there to examine the horse when the horse's prescribed clogs were checked by a farrier, and that day the horse didn't want to put weight on his left front hoof. There's also a mention of abscesses. She says that Loomer told her the other foot was now compromised because the horse was bearing weight on it instead. She says that Loomis told her the horse was in pain because of her, that the horse would be in pain for weeks with a poor prognosis, and that the horse should be euthanized. She went ahead but apparently found information later that makes her believe this outcome was not necessary. She also mentions subsequent billing concerns that she became aware of with her other horses.

Loomer says that she had been taking care of the complainant's horse for 11 months at the time. She also says that the complainant had 24 hours to reconsider the euthanasia but did not. She says that after the euthanasia the complainant actually thanked her for her love and compassion. She states that the complainant later complained about her billing and the relationship was terminated, though this particular event seems different than that mentioned by complainant. A more detailed timeline follows.

The Investigative Committee discussion is rather bare even by their usual standards; they say they looked at everything and found no violations.
