A dog comes down with diabetes and the investigators complain about a retired nurse

Complaint: Complaint 18-45
Respondent: Linda Lueth
Premises: Cortaro Farms Pet Hospital

The complainants had previously brought their dog to Lueth for a checkup several months prior and say they noted changes such as panting, drinking, and not being as energetic. Several months after, the complainants brought their dog to Lueth again for a checkup with related concerns before leaving the state for several weeks but they say only an impacted anal gland was found and a dental was recommended. While they were out of state the dog developed a skin condition, lost a significant amount of weight, and was diagnosed with insulin-dependent diabetes. The dog also developed vision problems the complainants attributed to the diabetes. The complainants blamed Lueth for not finding it sooner.

Lueth's response states that the symptoms relayed to her were nonspecific and can show up for many reasons in dogs. She also states that elevated blood glucose many years ago would not indicate a later predisposition toward diabetes.

The Investigative Committee said that there are no set guidelines on when to perform bloodwork but perhaps she should have done a workup because the complainants were so concerned. The Committee also blamed the friend watching the dog (a retired nurse, mind you) for not taking the dog to a veterinarian sooner.
