A shopping mall pet store puppy dies from parvo and the board ignores its investigators

Complaint: Complaint 18-46
Respondent: Linda Elliott
Premises: Ahwatukee Commons Veterinary Hospital

The complainant adopted a dog from Animal Kingdom for her family. The dog got sick with diarrhea and was taken to Elliott's clinic based on a recommendation from them. She states she brought a stool sample and was told it was insufficient. The problems were attributed to hypoglycemia and that as a result no care would be covered by Animal Kingdom. The complainant left the dog in hospital, was called to pick it up, but the hospital closed before she got there. The dog declined at home and died while on the way to emergency. She says a necropsy identified parvo and kennel cough. The complainant says it was heartbreaking to see the dog die and thinks Elliott cares more about referrals from Animal Kingdom than about the dogs.

Elliott's response largely matches with the complaint, though she tends to chalk much of it up to misunderstandings. Elliott also says she offered a necropsy too but the complainant didn't trust her. She helpfully suggests that if they ever get a new dog to get a big one that won't suffer from hypoglycemia.

The Investigative Committee felt that there was a good chance the dog would have survived if the parvo had been diagnosed, finding a failure to provide professionally acceptable procedures by not identifying the symptoms of parvo. The veterinary board voted to dismiss with no violations.
