A charity spay-and-neuter at animal control meets the minimum standards for care

Complaint: Complaint 18-54
Respondent: Kellie Barrett
Premises: Pima County Animal Control

The complainant, a former veterinary technician, had serious concerns regarding a charity operation set up by ASAVET. She noted a van crammed full of veterinary supplies and surgery being performed in what she felt was an unsanitary office building. She also states that subsequent calls came in regarding incisions coming apart and a scrotal sack that swelled up and split. She also states that she'd done surgeries on farms that were more sterile.

Barrett responds that of the dogs mentioned, only one had a post-surgery issue and that the charity drove the dog to Tucson for a scrotal ablation; indeed, per Barrett, everyone was a satisfied customer. She notes that the spay-and-neuter bus was in an accident and the animal control facility is not ideal but it meets all the legal requirements.

The Investigative Committee said that if someone's pet has complications sometimes they blame the facility's standards but that minimum standards of care were met.
