A long, drawn-out euthanasia traumatizes a house-call veterinarian

Complaint: Complaint 18-59
Respondent: Carol Rowand
Premises: Corona Veterinary Service

The complainant calls Rowand out to euthanize her dog and says it took two and a half hours to do the deed. The complainant says that there were a lot of needle sticks and that Rowand kept running out to the car for more drugs. She also states that it was really traumatic and exhausting for her to watch.

Rowand's response is short and states the dog needed to be restrained because of aggression. She also says that the dog's poor health made it difficult to place catheters so she was forced to perform euthanasia by heart stick under deep sedation. She also notes that she found the experience very traumatic and no longer performs in-home euthanasia.

The Investigative Committee found some medical records violations. Apparently she didn't get a signature before doing the job and didn't document how she gave the pentobarbital. The veterinary board dismissed and replaced with a letter of concern.
