A frequent complainant has concerns about cat care at another area hospital

Complaint: Complaint 18-68
Respondent: Abby Don
Premises: Adobe Veterinary Center

The complainant says that she tried to make an appointment with the clinic and was told that appointments were available, then told there weren't any. She believes this may have been due to mentioning her use of alternative therapies. She also says that once seen her cat was given a drug for vomiting when she requested an antibiotic for an upper respiratory and kidney problem. She also believes that the veterinarian gave her cat too many fluids and mistook drooling for vomiting. The complainant also says that the veterinarian told her that the cat would have to be hospitalized or euthanized, and that as a person of limited means, she could not pay thousands of dollars for such care. She also says that the hospitalization would have had to occur at one of the facilities she believes has harmed or killed her other cats.

Don responds with a discussion of the medical history. She also states that the cat's BUN, creatinine and other levels were too high to be read by her machine and had to be diluted. She says she discussed kidney disease with the complainant and long-term management at home including fluids and Cerenia. She also stated that the cat should be in a 24-hour hospital and that the facility was not equipped for 24-hour care. She also suggested euthanasia but says the complainant wasn't interested.

The Investigative Committee stated that Don did the best she could with a terminally-ill cat and an uncooperative complainant.
