A dog dies, a veterinarian is found to have altered records, and the board sends a letter

Complaint: Complaint 18-72
Respondent: Ivan Weinstein
Premises: Santa Cruz Veterinary Clinic

The complainant writes that Weinstein didn't treat her dog well. She states that her dog was bleeding everywhere, and in her depiction, "was passing her liver through her rectom [sic]." She says that he saw pieces coming out of the dog and performed x-rays on both sides of the dog but didn't warn her the dog was going to die. She also states that her dog was having breathing problems and looked sad. The dog later died. The complainant says that she was refused paperwork that stated liver problems were found.

Weinstein states that the medical record speaks for itself and that the complainant simply didn't understand the severity of the dog's condition. He says that the complainant had been treating the dog at home for three days, but by the time he saw the dog it may have been too late. He also states he offered a referral to a 24-hour emergency facility that would have been able to perform ultrasound and provide better care.

The Investigative Committee felt that Weinstein's medical records had been altered. They also wish that Weinstein had done more but he did offer a referral. The complainant and her witness said that Weinstein did not offer a referral, but confusion about an antibiotic led the Committee to doubt the credibility of the witness. In addition, they felt that Weinstein's diagnosis that an enlarged liver was causing the breathing issues to likely be incorrect. The Committee found a violation regarding medical records alteration; the veterinary board overruled and sent a letter of concern.

You may remember Weinstein from one of his other cases, 18-17, where a dog died under peculiar circumstances at a hospital that said he wasn't supposed to even be doing surgery.
