A pest control professional is upset that a veterinarian can't diagnose mange

Complaint: Complaint 18-86
Respondent: Kelli Evans
Premises: AZPetVet North Buckeye Animal Hospital

The complainant brought his dog to the veterinarian for itching and rashes. A skin scrape was negative so the dog was treated for allergies. Soon both humans and both dogs in the household had rashes, bumps, and itching, and he spoke with Evans about this. The complainant, a former pest control advisor, researched online and found that most results suggested scabies/mange. The complainant used permethrin to treat the household. The complainant followed up with Evans who allegedly criticized him for self-diagnosing and self-applying chemicals. He says that Evans eventually agreed to perform a second skin scrape that did come back positive. The complainant was quite concerned about the ethics behind the clinic's behavior and also wanted a refund.

Evans provides her timeline regarding the events as well. They mostly track but there are some differences. She does not recall some of the conversations occurring in the same way as the complainant, and she also says that she was only concerned about the self-application of the chemicals as the result of a misunderstanding. She also states that she believes the standard of care was met.

The Investigative Committee discussed that there was no reason for Evans to suspect mange as the dogs were well taken care of. They felt that a more likely initial explanation would have been allergies or environmental changes (ostensibly one that would cause the same symptoms in two dogs and two humans and be suspiciously similar to common presentations of scabies). The Committee also wished that Evans had explained the skin scrape did not actually rule anything out but that it did not constitute a violation.
