Respondent: | Courtnee Morton |
Premises: | Durango Equine Veterinary Clinic |
The complainant brought her horse from another state, and he wasn't eating well. He also had some light pink gums and seemed lethargic, so she took her horse to Morton, and she says Morton told her she had a very sick horse. The complainant was surprised as the horse seemed to be doing well overall. She says that the complainant performed an SAA test that came back elevated, and Morton instituted an aggressive course of antibiotic therapy (and eventually a nasogastric tube) that severely sickened the horse. The horse developed severe diarrhea that the complainant believes was the result of the antibiotics. She ended up taking the horse to multiple veterinarians who may have helped to some degree. She mentions she's concerned that nobody in Arizona could tell her what was happening to her horse. Fortunately, it appears that the horse survived Arizona, which is more than we can say for some.
We don't appear to have Morton's response. We do have a narrative from Farstvedt, another Arizona veterinarian, who examined the horse and then directed them elsewhere.
The Investigative Committee said that the treatment was appropriate. They did say it would have been nice to have test results reported sooner but that it was a holiday.
