A diabetic dog has wild blood glucose swings and ends up dead: Part II

Complaint: Complaint 19-08
Respondent: Barbara Guminski
Premises: East Mesa Animal Hospital
Related: 19-07

This complaint follows from 19-07 but pertains to Guminski rather than Kern's contribution.

Guminski's response does confirm that she directed the complainants to give honey water and to skip the insulin dose that evening. She then states the dog presented as hyperglycemic and specifically says it was because of the honey water and no insulin. She says that on admission the dog was started on medication for cardiomyopathy and hypothyroidism. She goes through other events during the hospitalization, noting that some of the blood work suggested an infectious process. She states they also wanted to perform an ACTH stim test because they weren't sure what was going on. She concludes that the owners declined further testing and "put [the dog's] needs first" by directing her to euthanize their dog.

The Investigative Committee discussion seems to round down on what the complainants were actually saying (and arguably much of what we do know about the dog would suggest): "The Committee discussed that Respondent's recommendation of honey water was an acceptable treatment for low blood glucose. If the dog did not improve, a recheck was recommended."
