A dog succumbs after being left in a cage at Arizona's first vet school and top necropsy provider: Part IV

Complaint: Complaint 19-22
Respondent: Jason Evans
Premises: Midwestern University
Related: 19-19, 19-20, 19-21, 19-23

Note that this is a very complex situation and stretches across several related complaints. This pertains specifically to the complaint against Evans.

The complainant tells us that Evans examined her dog multiple times at Midwestern after the incident with the aspiration of the mass. This is already written up in 19-19 and others and can be reviewed there. He examined the dog when the dog came back from the aspiration for the mass and could no longer walk, then examined the dog the subsequent day as well when the dog was able to walk in back. He also examined the dog about a week later when the dog could once again no longer walk. Among other notes the complainant says Evans concluded the dog was actually better on this final recheck than the prior one when the dog did walk for him.

Barbara McCloud, Midwestern's attorney, has a general response for this complaint. It's the same one from 19-19.

Evans' response has the same overall feel as the others in this batch; one's left with the feeling they all had the same assistant and her name may well be McCloud. The response is not particularly informative with respect to the larger questions broached by the complainant, though it does go over a ton of differential diagnoses for the dog. He suggests anything from a brain tumor to disc disease but suggests they first see a cardiologist.

The Investigative Committee didn't really have much to say: "The Committee discussed that Dr. Evans handled the case appropriately." That's it.

Evans used to work in the Phoenix area at the Veterinary Neurological Center before he ended up at Midwestern. This fits a pattern, particularly in Midwestern's earlier days, where much of their faculty seems to have been pulled from local veterinary practices.

Donald Noah's recused here because he was working for Midwestern University. See the writeup on 19-19 for details.
