A cat dribbles red-colored urine and dies a couple of days later

Complaint: Complaint 19-65
Respondent: Mary Eubank
Premises: Casa Grande Animal Hospital

The complainant says that she called the vet because her cat wasn't eating or drinking. The veterinarian diagnosed a UTI and sent them home with antibiotics and an x-ray; she says she was told it wasn't urgent and that they spent most of their time with a vet tech. At home she discovered the antibiotics were labeled "for dogs only." The cat was still doing poorly the next day and was finally able to leave a message for the vet, who was again busy. She was apparently told to skip the antibiotic because of the cat's vomiting. She kept trying to hydrate the cat with a water dropper but the cat continued to decline. The next morning she rushed the cat to AVECC but the cat was dead on arrival.

Eubank's response states that on examination the cat was dribbling red-colored urine onto the exam table. She suspected some form of urinary tract disease and recommended urine collection and an ultrasound. She also discussed the importance of fluids for the cat but says the complainant wasn't interested. She says the complainant agreed to the entire treatment plan except for subcutaneous fluids, but once the urine was collected, the complainant said not to send off the urine because of financial concerns. She discussed her concerns with the complainant and gave her a refrigerator magnet with AVECC's contact information.

The Investigative Committee said that the recommended diagnostics were declined by the complainant. They also said that the complainant could always have taken the cat to an emergency facility sooner. The medication dispensed was acceptable for cats (and there's no discussion why the label would have said "for dogs only" on it.)
