Complaint: | Complaint 19-77 |
---|---|
Respondent: | Kaleigh Robinson |
Premises: | 1st Pet Veterinary Centers Mesa |
The complainant says she noticed her cat had wet herself and seemed disoriented. Robinson saw the cat at 1st Pet. The complainant notes that she agreed to all the testing that Robinson wanted to do. The complainant said that the cat had vomited once but it was not a constant thing, but Robinson appeared to really have focused on it and gave her Cerenia pills. Robinson also said something was wrong with the liver and gave her denamarin. She was also given metronidazole without any explanation as to why. She was also given some "Medical Record Notes" that talked all about renal disease, which the complainant found odd as Robinson barely touched on it during their conversation. The complainant even asked if her cat needed to be euthanized and Robinson allegedly said she was happy to tell her no. The complainant said that Robinson didn't seem all that interested and acted as if she had better things to do. The next day she took the cat to her regular veterinarian where she was much worse, and the cat was euthanized due to being in the final stages of renal disease. The complainant says that her cat suffered terribly and that she would never recommend Robinson or 1st Pet.
Robinson's response sys that she doesn't really remember the case well as it has been quite a while. She does note that she accidentally swapped BUN and creatinine measurements in her notes but otherwise believes them to be accurate. She tells us about her evaluation of the cat. She says that the cat had several very concerning issues but the complainant declined hospitalization for the cat so she was sent home with medications. She says that at the time end state renal disease did not appear to be the cause of the cat's problems; rather she was focused on potential pancreatitis or liver issues based on all the testing that was done. She says that it appears she actually did discuss kidney disease with the complainant based on notes in the records and including a document regarding chronic kidney disease in the discharge instructions. She says that she recommended having further evaluation with internal medicine specialists.
The Investigative Committee said that the cat was not well but that a lot can change in three days. They said that cats generally don't die acutely from kidney failure as this cat did so something else might have been wrong with the cat. They also said that the cat didn't get follow-up as it was seen on an emergency basis. The Committee had no concerns about the treatment of the cat.
