A belated follow-up to a previous case in which a dog escaped the doors of a referral hospital

Complaint: Complaint 20-08
Respondent: Sandy Landry
Premises: BluePearl Peoria
Related: 19-88

This complaint is a somewhat delayed follow-on from 19-88, in which a complainant took her dog to BluePearl Peoria for a bleeding ear. She didn't get a lot of updates and then was asked to hurry out the door. Once she was outside, she was told that her dog had escaped and had run off down the street into the dark of night. The dog was eventually able to be recovered by the complainant after the dog came back to the parking lot. Klayton Lapa, the veterinarian involved in the great chase, recommended around $2000 and a general anesthesia for something a local veterinarian the next morning took care of for $200. For whatever reason the complainant apparently learned that Landry was the responsible veterinarian for the premises and filed a separate complaint against her. It's odd in that usually such complaints occur as a group and not separated as these are.

Landry's response reiterates that she wasn't there that day, that morning, or in fact ever saw the dog at all. She only learned about it when nasty social media postings were brought to her attention the next day. She says she also learned of it as a result of an internal incident report, but it seems that the social media postings took precedence. She says that nothing like this had ever happened at the facility before and that they had made some changes since then. They were also soliciting bids from contractors to determine a final fix that would prevent it from ever happening again. Oddly, she says that she's not sending a copy of the medical records as "you already have them from the case involving Dr. Lapa (19-75)" but Lapa's case was 19-88; 19-75 was about a different veterinarian, a different clinic, and an ovary.

This was handled by the Investigative Division so there's no committee report. The Board found no violations.
