A dog dies hemorraging from mouth and anus after visits to a veterinary clinic with strong Board ties

Complaint: Complaint 21-148
Respondent: Raegan Chambers
Premises: Prescott Animal Hospital

The complainant says that he brought his dog to Prescott Animal Hospital for chronic explosive diarrhea and vomiting; he relates that he met with another veterinarian, Taylor, on his first visit where he explained the dog had projective diarrhea shooting out a foot or more. She prescribed fluids and gave the dog some medicine; a fecal test came back negative. The dog didn't get any better and was brought back for a recheck; Chambers saw the dog this time and allegedly said the problem was the dog's food. He says that she was in a hurry and spent only a few minutes before recommending some special dog food and recommending a food supplement. A few days later the dog hemorraged out his mouth and anus at the same time; he called Prescott Animal Hospital but they told him they were getting ready to close. The complainant tried to take his dog to the Prescott Area Pet Emergency Hospital (itself the subject of at least five complaints including one instance where a dog was turned away three times while bleeding out his anus in 21-51) but it was too late. The complainant asks why Chambers would possibly send the dog home with a probiotic when the dog had been sick for weeks; he also questions why she did no further workup on the dog and notes that she seemed only interested in getting through patients. He wonders why nobody considered Acute Hemorrhagic Diarrhea Syndrome (AHDS). He believes Prescott Animal Hospital only cares about money; he notes that he emailed them about his concerns and was ignored.

Chambers' response confirms the general story of the dog presenting multiple times and not improving; however, she says that there was no mention of blood at the time, so she would not have considered AHDS as a diagnosis. She felt that the most likely problem was a "rich" diet and recommended blander foods; she also said that aside from the reported concerns the dog was doing really well on examination. She also says that it was clear to her that the FortiFlora probiotic wasn't working for the dog; she says it was time to ramp it up with Proviable Forte Kit. She also says that the dog was apparently seen at Chino Valley Animal Hospital but that they were unable to get the full records from the clinic. She says that the complainants called with concerns but were initially told that it could take two weeks or more for the diarrhea to resolve; if the dog didn't get better they recommended bringing the dog back for further tests. She also states that "based on the owners' description of [the dog's] status" they recommended taking the dog directly to the emergency clinic. She also says that Prescott Animal Hospital never received the complainant's email or she would have totally gotten back to him immediately.

The Investigative Committee had very little to say. They only discussed that they reviewed the case and said there were no violations.

Steven Dow, former Board member and current investigator, was on the Committee but recused; it's odd that this case wasn't sent to the other Investigative Committee to avoid an obvious conflict of interest. You see, Dow used to be the owner-operator of Prescott Animal Hospital. He replaced Cameron Dow, his son and inheritor of the clinic. Cameron Dow is married to none other than veterinarinan Amie Dow who is involved in the Yavapai veterinary emergency clinic with current Board member Nikki Frost. Prescott Animal Hospital and its affiliated Equine Center have been the subject of several complaints.
