A ferret's broken leg gets treated with diet at a known vet clinic: Part II

Complaint: Complaint 22-09
Respondent: Lorna Lanman
Premises: PetsVet Animal Hospital
Related: 22-08

This complaint follows from 22-08 and relates to Lanman.

Lanman's response states that she examined the ferret as a follow-up from Dorto. She states that the split was appropriately placed but that the bone density was off, performing in-house blood tests that found an abnormal calcium-to-phosphorus ratio. She states that surgery would be a bad idea due to the metabolic bone disease she diagnosed, recommending a change in diet and a lot of rest; she states that all four legs could fracture. A follow-up contact with the complainant's mother informed her that the ferret was at AZ Exotics. She says that she called there and the veterinarian told her that she did everything right; rather, the only real problem was that the complainants let the ferret get too rambunctious and caused further injury.

The Investigative Committee found several concerns regarding the radiographs, the splint, and the diagnosis of bone disease. They also believed that Lanman's suggested subsequent recheck was too far out for an injury in a young animal. The committee found a violation of failing to provide professionally acceptable procedures, but the board rounded it down to a letter of concern.

Lanman is perhaps best-known in some circles for using meat chunks as a diagnostic device for disc disease in 21-84.
