Investigators manage to turn a complaint about quality of care into a bedside manner dispute

Complaint: Complaint 22-102
Respondent: Timothy Chiasson
Premises: Exceptional Pets Green Valley

The complainant says she took her 5 month old kitten (adopted from Pima Animal Care and Control). It appears the cat was diagnosed with calicivirus at PACC but was never tested, and when the cat started showing discharge, wheezing, and sneezing, she used the free visit at Exceptional Pets (former side-hustle of veterinary board member Robyn Jaynes) to take a look. She says that the vet tech seemed kind and knowledgeable, but Chiasson seemed to act like it was a joke. In addition to his demeanor, she says that they were told to put a dab of an over-the-counter substance, Viralys, on the nose to make the problem go away. The cat didn't improve and finally had to go to Santa Cruz Veterinary Clinic for an emergency visit. There they found a fever, heard something in the lungs, and diagnosed ringworm. The cat was diagnosed with some type of respiratory infection and sent home with a variety of medications. We're told the cat is doing a lot better now thanks to the Santa Cruz clinic.

Chiasson's response states that at the time he saw the cat, the cat was asymptomatic. As a result the cat didn't need diagostics or treatment and just sent the cat home with a bottle of lysine. He says that the cat didn't show symptoms until a week later, was taken elsewhere, and was doing fine. He also says he would never recommend putting medication on the nose, and he also has no recollection of discussing calicivirus with the complainant.

The Investigative Committee only discussed that the complainant felt Chiasson was making fun of her cat's situation, calling it a "communication issue." The actual complaint seems to be that he was making a big joke of the situation and didn't try to come up with a plan for a sick cat; the complainant, at least, states that the cat was doing far worse during the visit than we read in the response.
