An injured dog is incorrectly treated and left to die at a specialty and emergency center: Part II

Complaint: Complaint 22-40
Respondent: Kayleigh Robinson
Premises: 1st Pet Veterinary Centers Chandler
Related: 22-39

This complaint follows from 22-39 and concerns Robinson's involvement in the case.

Robinson's response notes that she took over the case from Jadhwani after midnight. She examined the dog, noted some findings including an elevated heart rate, and made some adjustments to the dog's medication and IV regimen; medications included painkillers and anti-nausea medication in case she was in pain or nauseous, thus leading to an elevated heart rate.

She was in the middle of considering further changes when the call went out that the dog was found flopped over in her kennel without a heartbeat; Robinson helpfully calculates that based on treatment schedules, the dog was left alone in the kennel for no more than 33 minutes prior to being found flopped over without a heartbeat. In her words, "Emma was not neglected."

Robinson got to work trying to revive the dog with her colleagues while Jadhwani called the family to tell them the dog wasn't having a good time of it at the hospital. She also notes that the bandages removed from the dog didn't have a significant amount of blood in them and "there was not a pool of blood in the kennel, only small smears on the blankets." The family was temporarily uncertain about disposition of the body so it was placed in a bag and then a cardboard coffin; unlike many veterinarians, Robinson at least had the foresight to shove the corpse in the fridge in the event a necropsy was later requested. She also had a later conversation with Maureen Kirk, and she states that the family has her deepest sympathy; she grieves as well.

The Investigative Committee decided that this was all fine.

Robinson's discussion about the amount of blood is relevant because of one of the Findings of Fact: "When Complainant visited the dog, she was told by a male technical staff member that the dog had bled out and was found dead in a pool of blood." Perhaps the staff member was confusing this dog with a different one? Who knows.
