A rejected refill request leads to a veterinary board complaint: Part I

Complaint: Complaint 18-43
Respondent: Sheri Beck
Premises: Ocotillo Animal Clinic and Pet Resort
Related: 18-44

The complainant had been taking her dog to the same clinic for over a decade and phoned in a request for a refill even though she hadn't been to the clinic for a few months. The receptionist told her that it shouldn't be a problem since it had only been ten months, but Beck later informed her that she'd have to come in for a visit. The complainant said that she wouldn't be able to get time off from work and her dog needed the medication for urinary issues. Beck still replied that she needed to come in for an office visit and have tests performed.

Beck's formal response is much the same aside from some additional history on the dog, also stating that the complainant had her records transferred prior and that the dog was overdue for a yearly checkup.

The Investigative Committee said that while no period of time is defined in the law regarding a valid client relationship, the clinic's policy was acceptable. Curiously, the Committee also said that the complainant had severed the relationship by having her records transferred to another clinic.
