A critically ill cat gets turned away from a veterinary hospital because of a prior personal dispute: Part I

Complaint: Complaint 20-69
Respondent: Annette Majoue
Premises: Scottsdale Veterinary Clinic
Related: 20-70

The complainant tells us of the devastation he's experienced over the loss of his cat. His cat was older and had many health problems but took a turn for the worse. His normal veterinarian (Lopez at Scottsdale Hills Animal Hospital) had just closed so he took the cat to Scottsdale Veterinary Clinic as it was the closest available. He says that he had gone to the clinic for 15 years going back to when a veterinarian named Goldsmith had owned it. On arrival he was told he needed to come up with $400 which he was able to do so by phoning a friend. He says they had the cat for about half an hour before telling him they would not see the cat. Majoue was the attending veterinarian. He then had to drive the cat to VCA in Mesa and the cat later died. He says that Lopez told him the cat was not in any condition to be transported and should have been treated rather than turned away. He also states that he believes Majoue did not decide by herself to turn the cat away. He believes that at least one person in the front desk played a role. He also has notes regarding his concern about a male veterinarian who cannot be identified based on the information porvided (perhaps the attending vet who has some information redacted). He also asks how a veterinary hospital can turn away a critically ill animal when a human hospital cannot. He ends his complaint with character references from a judge, a somewhat prominent political figure, and a retired FBI agent.

Majoue begins her response by stating it's been four years since she saw the cat that day (the complainant notes he's struggled to deal with this and knew he was running out of time to file the complaint). She also says that the complainant had been "fired" from the clinic for bad behavior and was warned about that when he showed up with the cat. She says that in her opinion the cat wasn't in serious condition and could easily be transported. She concludes by stating that given the complainant's poor relationship with the clinic that she went above and beyond by examining the cat and sending him away.

The Investigative Committee had concerns that Majoue didn't take a complete history of the cat and believes she may have missed things that would have impacted the outcome. The Committee also faults the complainant for taking the cat to a clinic where he was not welcome. The Committee said they had some concerns but that the law doesn't require a veterinarian to document an animal's medical history in the record.

You'll meet Majoue again (indirectly) in complaint 20-73 and its related complaints. She was the only surgeon BluePearl could find for a dog that was dying of bloat.
