A veterinary hospital uses insulin prescriptions as leverage to get a dog to come back for a recheck: Part I

Complaint: Complaint 21-101
Respondent: Danielle Landreth
Premises: Power Road Animal Hospital
Related: 21-102

The complainant says that his family pet has been cared for at Power Road Animal Hospital. He says that the dog has gone blind and is under treatment for diabetes and doing well. The dog's insulin is shipped from Chewy pharmacy which contacted Power Road to renew the prescription. He says that Power Road refused the prescription without seeing the dog and the dog is actually three hours away right now; he also tells us that Power Road has never liked giving prescriptions because they don't get the profit for the insulin. When he asked what could be done he says that one of the staff told him that taking care of a diabetic pet isn't easy and perhaps they should find another home for the dog. He responded that was not something to say to someone trying to give the pet the best life they could, at which point the staff member allegedly said that not everybody is cut out for the time and the responsibility it takes. He asked for his records to be transferred and was allegedly told to go to hell; the staff member allegedly accused him of abuse as well. He also relates that in the past he's had problems with being able to even speak with the veterinarian during visits and at one point refused to pay on the grounds there wasn't actually a vet visit; he says animals deserve better.

Landreth's response largely paints the complainant as not doing a very good job managing the dog's diabetes and unwilling to accept most of her recommendations. We're told that the dog was originally on a once-a-day insulin dosing; Landreth recommended a twice-a-day dosing but was told no several times before the complainant agreed. We're told that she informed the client to not give insulin if the dog was lethargic and not eating (out of concern for hypoglycemia) but also told that when the dog was lethargic it was a sign he needed more insulin (because of hyperglycemia). We were told the dog was given a referral to Eye Care for Animals for cataract surgery but that the dog's diabetes was likely too bad for them to approve surgery. It appears that the dog's glucose curves started to improve but the complainant no longer saw Landreth; Johnson took over at that time. She approved insulin refills several times but apparently noted that the complainant was not happy that the clinic couldn't price match Chewy and that the clinic would only prescribe two bottles at a time rather than four. Johnson subsequently found via a fructosamine test that the dog's diabetes was poorly controlled; we're also told that the clinic would not prescribe insulin without the dog coming in for glucose checks and that they finally terminated the complainant as a client.

The Investigative Committee discussed that they didn't even need to speak with Landreth. No violations were found.
