A veterinary hospital uses insulin prescriptions as leverage to get a dog to come back for a recheck: Part II

Complaint: Complaint 21-102
Respondent: Melissa Johnson
Premises: Power Road Animal Hospital
Related: 21-101

This complaint follows from 21-101 and pertains to Johnson's involvement in the case.

Johnson writes that she received a request for a Vetsulin refill and noted that Schnieder, another vet at the clinic, already wrote that they wouldn't refill the insulin for them unless the dog came in for a fructosamine level. She says that she had already refilled the insulin for them (with zero refills) and specifically noted that the dog would have to come in for a recheck; this task was delegated to a staff member to pass along to the complainant. Johnson also says that they didn't require the complainant to bring the dog in for the last refill, only to schedule an appointment; she says that the complainant hasn't been doing a good job of managing the diabetes and may even be trying to adjust the insulin doses himself at home. Johnson describes the difficulty of managing diabetes in very similar terms to Landreth, even sharing certain turns of phrase ("frustrating disease"). She said that her "intentions were to never deprive [the dog] of insulin, but to use the request as leverage to get [the dog] back in for the labwork that she needs."

The Investigative Committee discussed that they didn't even need to speak with Johnson; it's a copy-and-paste from Landreth's in 21-101. No violations were found.

Johnson was also the target of 20-52 in which a dog presented with some problems, was given some enemas, and finally dropped dead; Johnson said the complainant was cheap and used bad words.
