A top facility offers a discount and questions arise after a dog dies in the middle of heart surgery: Part III

Complaint: Complaint 21-28
Respondent: Sage Hubert
Premises: VetMed
Related: 21-26, 21-27, 21-29

This complaint follows from 21-26 and pertains to Hubert's involvement. Hubert was a resident who was involved in the procedure.

Hubert's response is basically a two-paragraph rehash of the official medical record. He says the dog came in to the cardiology service and was diagnosed with a shunt. He says Boutet told the complainants the dog should have surgery sooner rather than later; he says that options for surgical ligation and closure using an ACDO device were both mentioned. We're told that because of the owner's time limitations the ACDO device was utilized (this brings up a question as to whether the statistics quoted were for the ACDO device vs. surgical ligation, as well as how many times VetMed had performed each of those procedures). He tells us that anesthesia involved butorphanol, midazolam, propofol, maropitant, and cefazolin with isoflourane as maintenance and monitored by a veterinary technician, Kristen Bush (the complainants say that in the medical records they were given there was no information about the anesthesia administered or who did it). He says that he scrubbed up along with Boutet and Miller; he primarily watched and ran the surgical table while Boutet and Miller did all the work. Another cardiologist, Derek Matthews, was involved and performed a transophageal echocardiogram to ensure the device deployed as expected (one wonders if the complainants even know Matthews was there); we're told the device deployed with no complications (this also doesn't line up with what the complainant was apparently told on the phone). Hubert says that the dog unfortunately went into cardiopulmonary arrest during recovery.

The Investigative Committee discussion is pasted from 21-26.
