A dog is found to be stable and later found dead at a known specialty and referral chain

Complaint: Complaint 22-68
Respondent: Aaron Franko
Premises: BluePearl Avondale

The complainant states she brought her dog in durng the early morning (1:41 AM) and the dog was triaged (2:02 AM). She heared nothing for the next hour until she was asked to go to a back room, at which point she alleges one of their veterinarians, Farris, said she wouldn't have left the dog alone if the she had known the dog's temperature was so low. She further learned the vet tech brought the dog back for "choking" that was actually vomiting, found a temperature of 95.8 degrees, and put the dog in a kennel. THe dog was found dead about half an hour later. She was told that she wouldn't have to pay for the visit and would be reimbursed for the cremation. A follow-up investigation by BluePearl appears to have not materialized or, at the very least, ignored the complainant; she was told that the vet tech would be taking safety classes but the dog's final records were never even updated.

Aaron Franko writes the response as the responsible veterinarian for the premises. He says that he wasn't even at the BluePearl Avondale location, and that he hasn't even been the responsible veterinarian for BluePearl Avondale since 2019; he relates that Marlayna Barnard should be on file as the new responsible veterinarian (the Findings of Fact state nobody submitted a new premises appliation so the records never got updated).

This was an Investigative Division report that went right to the board. As an aside, BluePearl locations and their triage practices come up quite a bit in complaints; see 19-41, 21-60, 21-61, 21-98, 22-31, and 22-32.
